Mile 297 Report
Nehalem Beach, Nehalem Bay SP
March 4, 2017
This was a cloudy/rainy/windy day.
Report Details
This was a cloudy/rainy/windy day. The waves have pulled out the sand exposing more of the heaping wood, especially to the south of the mile, and leaving a cliff up to 10 feet high between the sloping beach and the piles of debris. Interestingly there was some black sand lightly deposited at the high water marks. There were only four people, two collecting debris, and two just walking with a dog. Even the shorebirds were elsewhere and only a few gulls, one hawk and one cormorant were circling. No bird carcasses were found. The beach was clean with no tracks or other damage. As of March 15th, the beach will be closed to all traffic except walking on the wet sand to protect the nesting sites of the Western Snowy Plover. That continues until Sept. 15.
Conditions
Temperature: 45 F. Cloud Cover: Rain. Wind Velocity: Strong. Wind Direction: NW.
Human Activities
Number of people: 4. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 2. Other Activities: 2 Collecting debris.

Natural Changes
The foredune is building. There are still piles of large wood high on the beach, with more exposed now as the wind has removed some of the top sand. There is as much as a 10 foot drop where the sand has been pulled out in front of the debris.
