Report Details
The beach consisted of a high ridge of accumulated sand with a six degree slope and lagoons in the runnel. The ridge was broken by two riptide embayments and lagoon outflows. To the south the beach slope lessened to three degrees. Sand has accumulated around the driftwood and at the southern end of the Snowy Plover nesting area. Tangles and individual Zostera (Eelgrass) leaves and kelp (Postelsia, Cystoseira, Macrocystis, Nereocystis, Fucus and Egregia) caught on the sand ridge. A flock of Sanderlings foraging on wet sand of New River. A few Western Gulls. Fox tracks on the beach. One dead immature Western Gull. The driftline included one Sea Star (Pisaster ochraceus), broken Sand Dollars (Dendraster), few Mole Crabs (Emerita), many Dungeness Crab (Cancer magister) molts, pieces of Sea Nettle Jelly (Chrysaora), Gastropod egg cases, Ctenophores, one Polyorchis Jellyfish, Hydrozoa, Bryozoa, shells, rocks and several clumps of peat. Western Tiger Beetles on the dry sand along Twomile Creek. Wind speed of 9.6 mph from the NW. The air and ocean temperatures were 56 and 56.6 degrees F, respectively.

Notable Wildlife
A flock of Sanderlings foraging on wet sand of New River. A few Western Gulls. Fox tracks on the beach. Western Tiger Beetles (Cicindela oregana oregana) on the dry sand along Twomile Creek.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. One dead immature Western Gull.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
One Sea Star (Piaster ochraceus). Broken Sand Dollars (Dendraster). A few Mole Crabs (Emerita). Many Dungeness Crab (Cancer magister) molts. Pieces of Sea Nettle Jelly (Chrysaora).
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells, Small rocks. Ctenphores, one Polyorchis Jellyfish, Hydrozoa and Bryozoa, clumps of peat.

State Parks have installed two signs on this beach, one at the north end of Mile 96 and another along the north edge of New River to alert beachwalkers that there is no camping along this section of the beach. Report from Diane and Dave BilderbackHere on the south coast, we have been having a wash up of a pelagic purple tunicate, Dolioletta gegenbauri, that at times causes a deep purple wash on the beach and also has colored small sand pools.
