Report Details
Driftline consisted mainly of small rocks, a few isolated kelp (Macrocystis, Fucus, Cystoseira, Hymenena, Postelsia, and Egregia), the flowering plants, Zostera (Eelgrass) and Phyllospadix (Surfgrass), worm tubes, a few crab carapaces, and a few shells. One Osprey was flying over the surf. Four Caspian Terns were resting on the beach while four other terns caught fish in the mouth of New River. Western Gulls resting on the beach. Two Brandt's Cormorants and two Double-crested Cormorants flying south over the surf. One dead Pacific Sardine at the confluence of Twomile Creek and New River. Storm surges deposited debris up the drainage of Twomile Creek. New River has eroded a large portion of the dunes leaving a 20 foot sand cliff. Using Google Earth, we estimated that New River has moved 1822 feet north and has removed 1180 feet of the foredune since 2007. We also estimated that New River is at least 12 feet deep and running very strongly. This also is a dramatic change from previous years. Ridge and runnel forming north of mouth of New River. Beach slope low (3 degrees). Air and ocean temperatures were 66 and 58 degrees F, respectively. No wind. Low human impact (1)- walking.
