Shells, crab casings, kelp/algae, broken sand dollars, Lion's Mane jellies, worm casings and tangles of Sea Grass in driftline.

Shells, crab casings, kelp/algae, broken sand dollars, Lion's Mane jellies, worm casings and tangles of Sea Grass in driftline. Western and Semipalmated Sandpipers foraging on beach. One Snowy Plover high up on dry sand. Ringed-bill Western and Heermann's Gulls on beach. Barn Swallow flying over beach. Two Common Murre and one immature gull dead on beach. One large Gray Whale vertebra buried in the sand. Jim Rice (MNSN) granted permission to collect the vertebra for the Shoreline Education for Awareness education program. 18 sea stars washed up on beach and 6 sea stars washed up along New River. Ridge and runnel formation with beach slopes of 4-13 degrees. Wind speed of 6.3 mph from NW. Air and ocean temperatures of 58 and 53 degrees F, respectively. Low human impact (1).

Called Jim Rice (Marine Mammal Stranding Network Coordinator) and asked permission to collect Whale vertebra for the Shoreline Education for Awareness Education program and was granted permission. Kelp and algae were Nereocystis (Bull Kelp), Egregia (Feather Boa Kelp), Cystoseira (Northern Bladder Chain), and Postelsia palmaeformis (Sea Palm). Tangles of the Sea Grass, Zostera. Beach slope of 4-13 degrees.

Report from Diane and Dave BilderbackHere on the south coast, we have been having a wash up of a pelagic purple tunicate, Dolioletta gegenbauri, that at times causes a deep purple wash on the beach and also has colored small sand pools.
