Mile 158 - Oregon Dunes NRA, west of south end of Carter Lake - June 3, 2013

Beautiful, very windy day. Started out at 63 degrees and by the time we finished, the temp rose to 73. Many scattered small pebbles (1 1/2 inches and smaller) plus small pieces of broken shells, mainly clam...razor and other species plus a couple mussel. Very, very little to no shoreline plant debris. The people who braved the wind essentially walked to the water's edge, snapped an "I was here" photo and promptly returned to the mile long trail back to the parking lot.

Temperature: 73 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Strong. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 3.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 10. Walking or running: 7. Other Activities: 3 in parking lot. Not sure if vehicles are allowed near the plover nesting area, but quad tire tracks plus tracks of a larger vehicle were on the upper edge of the wet sand.

Concerns

Apparent violations: Tire tracks on the beach.

Notable Wildlife

The beach was void of almost all life forms. One small wad of seaweed (approx 2' in diameter) was seen. One seagull was cruising the area...no signs of plovers.

A couple crabs and a small cluster of mussels.

Driftline Content

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells, Small rocks. No sign of tsunami debris
