Mile 158 - Oregon Dunes NRA, west of south end of Carter Lake - August 12, 2013

Report Details

Nice hiking weather. Mid 60's with very little wind in the 3-4 1/2 mph range. Intermittent fog/heavy overcast, but sun's radiation through the overcast made wearing even a light jacket seem too warm. Many more than usual dead crab at both low water line and high water line. Very little ocean vegetation in the tide lines. No birds to be seen.No sign of tsunami debris.Peculiar small items one to one and a half inches long by one-eighth inch diameter as seen in one of the photos. If anyone knows what these are, please let me know.

Human Activities

Number of people: 107. Number of dogs: 3. Walking or running: 20. Playing in surf: 2. Playing in sand: 4. Sitting: 4. Other Activities: 45 & 32. Of the "other" category, 45 were from a tour bus visiting the dunes..they did not walk to the beach. The other 32 were in private cars , RV's or motorcycles in the parking lot. Couldn't tell if they had walked to the beach or were going to walk to the beach.

Notable Wildlife

No sign of birds...none! No gulls or plovers. zero, zip!

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Unusual concentration. Many more than usual Dungeness crab bodies and parts and pieces. Averaging approximately one per every 15 to 20 feet.

Driftline Content

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells. Strange little tubular items as seen in one of the accompanying photo
