At 5:30 on a cool, cloudy morning, the beach north of the Coquille River lighthouse was empty of human life but full of other creatures: 8 whimbrels, gulls and crows.

The stretch south of the Coquille River before sunrise on a cloudy day saw 6 whimbrels and gobs of gulls on the wet sand, 2 black oyster catchers on a close-in rock, foraging crows, and cormorants flying toward the river.
