A surprising number of people were on the southern leg of this mile between 6 and 7 a.m.: 2 dog walkers, a power walker and 3 rock hunters. One dog was unleashed. About a dozen cormorants were flying toward the Coquille River while Canada geese and gulls loitered on the wet sand. Sticks, logs, shell fragments, kelp, small stones and mostly plastic litter occupied the drift line. Wave overtopping and erosion of sea grass were noted on the stretch between the beach-facing houses and the Madison Ave. access trail. Temperature was 40, no wind but some clouds.
