Mile 262 Report
Cape Kiwanda State Park
February 13, 2018
Very clean, flat beach abruptly ends at vegetated hillside.
Report Details
Very clean, flat beach abruptly ends at vegetated hillside. North side of dune gently sloped enough for 1/3rd of the way up for vehicles to have gone up that far, judging from the tracks in the sand. Lots of little rocks on beach at north end. Lots of big rocks at south end, base of Cape. Access road at McPhillips Park is deeply eroded but trucks still driving it.
Conditions
Tide Level: 7.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 3. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 3. parents with small child and dog enjoying walking on the beach and climbing the dune
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
subadult Bald Eagle 2 Black Oystercatchers
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass. very clean beach, probably because high tide at 10:30 a.m. went all the way up to the vegetated hillside (dune) and took everything back with it
Natural Changes
Erosion of vegetated foredune. the vegetated bluff is now cleanly cut off from the beach, thanks, probably, to the Super Moon high tides in January. Dune on this north side is now fairly gently sloped instead of steep, with tire tracks running halfway up it
Actions & Comments
Less erosion of Cape than I expected from the high tidal event in January. The area behind the warning sign at the west end of the beach is more eroded and no evidence of people going up that way, No signs anymore saying no vehicle traffic beyond this sign.
