Report Details

The only human activity noted was one couple fishing off the rocks - the only shoreline access point - at the extreme north end of the mile.  Only common wildlife was observed: a few gulls and comorants.  No physical changes have occurred to the mile in the last three months, a situation quite common with the erosion-resistant basalts of the mile.  The inaccessibility of the cliffed coastline of the mile also severely limits potential for any human modifications.  The gift shop area at the Lookout is blocked off, so the observation point for observing driftline content was not accessible.

Conditions

Temperature: 65 F. Tide Level: 3.0 feet.

Activities

Number of people: 2. Fishing: 2.

Other Activities: Three vehicles were noted in the parking area that serves the north end of mile 226 and the south end of mile 227, but only two people were seen fishing together at the north end of mile 226, so the rest of the people must have been on mile 227..

Concerns

Apparent violations: No concerns noted..

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 3.

Notable Wildlife

Nothing was observed that was notable, just some gulls and comorants.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Nothing noted.

Wrackline Content

Access to the viewpoint to observe a cobble-beach cove where the only driftline content on the mile can be observed was not possible, so I couldn't list any of the types above.

New Development

Nothing noted.

Man-made Modifications

Nothing noted.

Natural Changes

Nothing new observed since last observation three months ago.

Actions & Comments

There is nothing to take action on.

Otter Crest, State Wayside

March 30, 2026

On a cool, partly cloudy, and somewhat windy afternoon, no people were directly observed along the shoreline, though I did see a couple vehicles parked on Otter Crest Loop above where people may have access to areas at the top of the bluff.

Mile 226

Otter Crest, State Wayside

December 24, 2025

Mile 226 continues to see very little human activity due to the difficulty of access because of tall basalt cliffs rising directly out of the ocean with few small pocket beaches.
