Report Details

It was a nice day to be observing the coast, what with the moderate temperature, light wind, and clouds that covered the sky thinly.  Views of the calm sea were extensive and dramatic.  A few gulls and comorants were observed on nearshore rocks and whales were seen several hundred yards offshore.  There were numerous pelicans on Gull Rock.  No physical changes were observed along the shoreline, as is usual with the resistant basalt of this area.

Conditions

Temperature: 63 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 5.6 feet.

Human Activities

There was no human activity on or near the shoreline of mile 226. The activity was along Otter Crest Loop and at the Lookout where there were numerous people and their vehicles. Ocean views were excellent, there were several whales spouting, the weather was good, and the Lookout was open, so conditions were optimum.

While not within mile 226, Gull Rock, just to the southwest, was studded with pelicans. And, offshore of mile 226, there were at least three whales feeding.

It was a very pleasant sunny day and the ocean was calm, so visibility at and slightly below the surface of the ocean was excellent.
