Mile 226 Report
Otter Crest, State Wayside
December 21, 2017
Human activity was confined to The Lookout (Otter Crest Wayside State Park), where there were several people inside the building and at the viewing area to the south.
Report Details
Human activity was confined to The Lookout (Otter Crest Wayside State Park), where there were several people inside the building and at the viewing area to the south. While inside the building, I observed a grey whale spouting just to the north of Gull Rock. Others there observed a peregrine falcon while I was there. No physical or man-made changes were observed on this mile. The hard basalt in the cliffs is very resistant to change and the inaccessibility of the shoreline at the base of the cliffs precludes human impacts.
Conditions
Temperature: 45 F. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: S. Tide Level: 7.6 feet.
Activities
Other Activities: Note: The shoreline is generally not accessible on this mile.. The only human activity was at The Lookout, well above the ocean..
Concerns
Notable Wildlife
One grey whale was spotted. The only other wildlife observed was several cormorants and some gulls.
Wrackline Content
Small rocks. I was able to observe a cobble beach from a distance, using binoculars. A little unusual was the fact that there was nothing in the drift line other than the rocks making up the beach.
New Development
Nothing of any sort noted.
Man-made Modifications
Nothing was noted.
Natural Changes
No changes were noted, including on the rockfall below and to the north of The Lookout.
Actions & Comments
The basalt cliffs of this mile are remarkably stable, thus natural changes are very minimal. In addition, due to the inaccesibilty of this mile, human activities and impacts are essentially non-existent.

On a cool, partly cloudy, and somewhat windy afternoon, no people were directly observed along the shoreline, though I did see a couple vehicles parked on Otter Crest Loop above where people may have access to areas at the top of the bluff.

Mile 226
Otter Crest, State Wayside
Mile 226 continues to see very little human activity due to the difficulty of access because of tall basalt cliffs rising directly out of the ocean with few small pocket beaches.
