Mile 195 - South San Marine Beach, Starr Creek - January 31, 2016

Report Details

It was a rare, partly sunny day, bringing many hikers and dogs onto the beach. Streams were full, making the crossing of Starr Creek a challenge. I included a photo of a fibrous material washed up along the tide line and am looking for identification. Nothing else was unusual.

Conditions

Temperature: 46 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.5 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 21. Number of dogs: 9. Walking or running: 21. There was significant plastic litter, including large pieces. I wish I had brought a larger collection bag.

Notable Wildlife

A transparent fibrous material was washed up along much of the high tide line. It looked like shredded plastic, but I think it is natural, perhaps from seaweed. (See attached photo.) Does anyone know what it is? Visitors to Cape Perpetua have seen it and asked me.

This is my first walk and report since losing my canine companion, Westly, over a year ago. The only important observation in this report is tire tracks from illegal driving on the beach.

Walking north oh Wayside Lodge I saw 15 or so dead Black Turnstone. That was the only species of bird that was dead. Lots of plastic bottles that I picked up.
