Mile 195 Report
South San Marine Beach, Starr Creek
July 31, 2021
I walked Mile 195 with my dog Westly on his eleventh birthday.
Report Details
I walked Mile 195 with my dog Westly on his eleventh birthday. It was a pleasant day, not too hot or cold. There were fewer beach walkers than I expected at this time when many visitors are escaping heat in the valley. The only unusual item to report is the observation of vehicle tracks along the whole mile of beach, originating farther north. This is evidently a violation, as the beach is posted just north of Starr Creek for "no vehicles."
Conditions
Temperature: 62 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 2.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 30. Number of dogs: 7. Walking or running: 28. Tidepooling: 2. Fresh tire tracks from a 4-wheeled vehicle were present in the sand near the high tide line, starting north of mile 195 and continuing across Starr Creek to where the beach ends at stairs going up to the 804 trail, where the vehicle turned and headed back north. A sign above the stairs makes it clear that vehicles are not allowed on the beach, so this was a violation unless it was a park patrol. (See attached photos.)
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Only the usual western gulls
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces.
Actions & Comments
No report was made of the tire tracks, mostly because I didn't know whom to contact.

It was a pleasant, warm day to share the 804 Trail and beach with quite a few visitors.

This is my first walk and report since losing my canine companion, Westly, over a year ago. The only important observation in this report is tire tracks from illegal driving on the beach.

Walking north oh Wayside Lodge I saw 15 or so dead Black Turnstone. That was the only species of bird that was dead. Lots of plastic bottles that I picked up.

I was just curious if a person who is knowledgeable about geology could explain what I'm seeing in the cliff here?

Walking mile 195 has resumed, now that steps from the 804 trail to the beach, in the middle of the mile, are back up.
