Gwynn Cr, Neptune SP / North access, Cummins Cr
August 19, 2019
In general area free of significant litter, but much new graffiti spray painted at the outlet of Gwynn Creek just north of the North Neptune parking lot.
Report Details
In general area free of significant litter, but much new graffiti spray painted at the outlet of Gwynn Creek just north of the North Neptune parking lot. Also a large graffiti painted inside the culvert at same location, though we do not know if this is new. Graffiti and firering inside large cave on far south portion of Section 189. Visitors have been moving a lot of large driftwood around to make sculptures, and there are some recently used fire rings throughout section. We observed gulls and ravens, dragonflies, lots of healthy starfish (no wasting diseases seen), green anenome, tadpoles and small fish in the tidepools. One dog off leash chased gulls. A visitor has made a small dam with rocks across one area of Cummins Creek as it nears the high tide line. It was not tall enough to really hold water back and we thought it would probably wash away when rain and storms begin again.
Conditions
Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 0.4 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 22. Number of dogs: 8. Walking or running: 17. Sitting: 1. Surfing: 3. We saw evidence of recent fires in 3 fire rings. We saw abundant carvings into the sand on steep bluffs of names, etc. which we had noted on the last report. We saw new evidence of at least 9 areas where someone had spray painted smile faces and their initials in pink paint just north of the North Neptune parking lot down by the outlet for Gwynn Creek. There was a large (about 6' x 15') spray painted graffiti initials on the inside of the culvert in this same area of Gwynn Creek. Throughout the entire 189 length there were multiple driftwood enclosures/sculptures/"art" made by people recently. Some trash found in these like candles and marijuana containers, but on the whole the 189 had little litter to report.
Concerns
Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs
Vehicles
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 4. Possible gull 1, possible murres 2, other unknown
Driftline Content
Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea).
New Development
There was yellow "Do Not Enter" tape stretched across a footpath at the North Neptune parking lot, but we were unable to determine why.
Natural Changes
We saw 2 trees with very exposed roots overhanging a bluff, but do not know if that is a new occurrence so we took pictures to watch it. Also saw an area where a large bolder had come down, but do not know if recent so also photographed to record.
