Mile 189 Report
Gwynn Cr, Neptune SP / North access, Cummins Cr
June 25, 2021
I was on the mile from 5:40 am to about 8 am.
Report Details
I was on the mile from 5:40 am to about 8 am. There were two cars and three people enjoying the beach near Cummins Creek. I was fortunate enough to see an octopus, a pair of oystercatchers, a river otter, and several apparently reproductive pile worms (Nereis or something like it) on the beach. The main thing of interest in the sea wrack was an abundance of drift Postelsia. I didn't notice any recent man-made or natural changes.
Conditions
Cloud Cover: Foggy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: -2.7 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 3. Walking or running: 2. Tidepooling: 1. Other Activities: One person was casually looking around the rocks at intertidal life (not really tidepooling, but that's how I recorded it). The other two, just a brief foray down to the beach, standing around with no clear intent (they weren't really walking, but that's how I recorded it).. The parking lot at Gwynn Creek was empty when I arrived at 5:40 am; the parking lot at Cummins Creek had two cars in it besides mine when I arrived there at 6:40 am. There were three people on the beach over on the Cummins Creek side. One was looking at intertidal life on the rocks and the other two were together. The pair made a brief trip down to the beach where they weren't doing much of anything except looking around.

Notable Wildlife
I saw an octopus (photo attached) in a sand-filled pool over on the Gwynn Creek side. That was a treat. There were a pair of oystercatchers over on the rocks and on the sand just south of Cummins Creek. And I surprised a river otter at the farthest south point I could make along the beach, which is shy of the southern point of the mile. One other interesting thing I saw was quite a few pile worms (Nereis or something like it) on the beach. Some of them were in high color with swollen bodies (photo attached), suggesting something to do with reproduction was going on.

Stranded Marine Mammals

Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Didn't notice any dead fish or invertebrates except a starfish stranded, upside down on the sand
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). Lots of drift Postelsia, Dungeness crab molts, and one Pistaster stranded upside down on the sand. I wasn't keeping careful track of sea wrack
New Development
I didn't notice any new development
Man-made Modifications
I didn't notice any man-made modifications
Natural Changes
There is erosion along parts of the mile, but I didn't notice changes

Someone/organization has painted over the grafitti that had been sprayed all over the retaining wall under the freeway at the Gwynn Creek culvert (just north of the north Neptune Beach parking lot).
