Report Details

Lovely overcast day, almost no wind. The parking lot was closed and filling in with sand. The sand on the beach was higher than we have seen it in a long time, and almost all the usual rocky areas covered, with only the highest part of the mile not covered. We saw 15 different kinds of birds, with one new one, the Caspian Tern. About a 1/4 mile stretch with 100's of 1/2" size dead jelly fish in the high tide line. In another section a lot of dead Sea Stars, all sizes, being eaten by the gulls. 2 Harbor Seals in the water.

Notable Wildlife

Crows, Gulls, 10 Cliff Swallows, 4 Barn Swallows, 4 Pelagic Cormorants, 4 Brandts Cormorants, 1 Great Blue Heron, 9 Harlequin Ducks, 1 Brown Pelican, 1 Raven, 3 Song Sparrows, 1 Caspian Tern (new), 3 American Dippers (family), 300+- Surf Scoters out in water, 3 Wimbrels flying by. 2 Harbor Seals in water.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Many dead Sea Stars in tide pool area, all sizes. Gulls eating them. 24 in one 15yd. section. On the Tokatee Kloochman section, about a 1/4 mile of small dead jelly fish, about 1/2 inch size, in tide line.

It was a lovely day but the sand is gone from all but the first part of the beach so the rest is cobbles, making it hard to walk.

The day was very foggy so we didn't expect to see many birds but were very surprised to see 18 species, which has only happened two other times since 2003.
