Report Details

We are one day late but are planning to count this as our first quarter report. With both spring break and beach clean up going on there were a lot of people on the beach. We saw the fewest birds, by species and number, in 10 years. I don't think that is at all related to the number of people. Maybe the cold weather. Or lack of food. It was sunny but cool and moderate wind.

Conditions

Temperature: 46 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 0.3 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 30. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 9. Tidepooling: 1. Other Activities: 15 beach cleaning SOLV. I mentioned to the boy he was killing the barnacles and he stopped.

Concerns

Apparent violations: boy using stick to scrap off barnacles.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 16.

Notable Wildlife

The least number and species of birds we have seen in 10 years. Only about 13 gulls, 6 crows, 2 Harlequin Ducks, over 100 Surf Scoters close in to shore, 1 Pelagic Cormorant, 1 Brandt's Cormorant. 20 Harbor Seals.

Driftline Content

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells, Wood pieces. SOLV day so the beach was clean. Four students carried out a huge plastic pallet.

The day was very foggy so we didn't expect to see many birds but were very surprised to see 18 species, which has only happened two other times since 2003.
