Report Details

The walk started on a lovely day with people out enjoying the beach.  Then the wind picked up quite strongly and the beach emptied.  The sand has come back in so the cobbles were partially covered making it easier to walk.  On the cliffs were potentilla, armeria and in the wet areas, mimulus.  We counted 17 different species of birds.   The barnacle covered shoe was the most unusual thing we saw.  It had to have been in the water a long time for the barnacles to get that big.

Conditions

Temperature: 62 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 0.2 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 11. Walking or running: 6.

Notable Wildlife

crows, gulls, 2 ravens, 5 barn swallows, 6 pigeon guillemots, 1 cliff swallow, 1 great blue heron, 9 surf scoters, 2 oyster catchers, 10 pelagic cormorants, 3 Brandt's cormorants, 2 tree swallows, 1 harlequin duck, 1 robin, 1 red winged blackbird, 2 cedar waxwings, 1 turkey vulture, and 11 harbor seals.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). Someone left a pile of trash by the entrance to the parking lot. A hard hat covered with small barnacles, glass and plastic bottles, some covered with barnacles. We usually don't get ocean based trash probably because of all the rocks and tide pools out in the ocean. We also found an old shoe with bigger goose necked barnacles on it next to a piece of rope. We put the trash in bins at one of the parks.

Man-made Modifications

Someone spray painted words on one of the big rocks on the beach.

The day was very foggy so we didn't expect to see many birds but were very surprised to see 18 species, which has only happened two other times since 2003.
