Report Details

A very foggy day with the beach empty of people. The sand was the highest we have seen it in years so we were able to get out farther into the rocks to count sea stars. We had a -0.2 tide, the same we had in June when we only counted 84 sea stars. This time we counted 411 sea stars, 328 purple, 83 orange. Almost all were diseased except for 17 purple and 2 orange. In June about half had the wasting disease. We did see a new species of bird for our mile, 2 Semipalmated Plovers. Only five other birds, the second lowest count we have had. Heavy fog contributed with low visibility. A lovely quiet day but depressing with all the dying sea stars.

Conditions

Temperature: 60 F. Cloud Cover: Foggy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: -0.2 feet.

The day was very foggy so we didn't expect to see many birds but were very surprised to see 18 species, which has only happened two other times since 2003.
