Mile 185 Report
August 14, 2014
A very foggy day with the beach empty of people.
A very foggy day with the beach empty of people. The sand was the highest we have seen it in years so we were able to get out farther into the rocks to count sea stars. We had a -0.2 tide, the same we had in June when we only counted 84 sea stars. This time we counted 411 sea stars, 328 purple, 83 orange. Almost all were diseased except for 17 purple and 2 orange. In June about half had the wasting disease. We did see a new species of bird for our mile, 2 Semipalmated Plovers. Only five other birds, the second lowest count we have had. Heavy fog contributed with low visibility. A lovely quiet day but depressing with all the dying sea stars.
Temperature: 60 F. Cloud Cover: Foggy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: -0.2 feet.
A very foggy day and no one there. Parking lot not plowed out and sand covering most of it.
5 Harlequin Ducks, 2 Brandt's Cormorants, 2 Surf Scoters, 2 Semi palmated Plovers, new for our mile, crows and gulls. We counted sea stars in June and wanted to recount them with the same minus tide. The sand was very high so we could get out farther. We counted 411 stars, 328 purple, 83 orange. Of those only 17 purple and 2 orange did not seem to be diseased. In June about half were diseased.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Unusual concentration. sea starts, mentioned above.
Beach very clean from the high tides.

When we arrived in the parking lot it was almost full but people seemed to be leaving.
It was a lovely day but the sand is gone from all but the first part of the beach so the rest is cobbles, making it hard to walk.
The day was very foggy so we didn't expect to see many birds but were very surprised to see 18 species, which has only happened two other times since 2003.
A sunny, very windy day that brought out a lot of people to enjoy the beach, mostly staying in the first sandy area.
It was a beautiful clear day and the wind only started up about 3 in the afternoon.
Florence had some rain but when we got to the mile it was just overcast and kept getting brighter.
