Mile 184 - N of Ocean Beach Picnic Area, S of Squaw Creek - June 5, 2020

Report Details

A very nice day for this mile, with a minus tide. Only 2 sea stars observed on the exposed rocks. Land slides seem more prominent than last time observed. First time on mile since early March, with the COVID 19 virus and stay home orders.

Conditions

Temperature: 53 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: -1.6 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 5. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 3. Other Activities: Two people with buckets, digging in the rocks below the cliff. Not sure what they were digging for.. Not sure what the two people were digging for up along the cliff line in the rocks. They both had large buckets & some kind of stick/shovel.

Notable Wildlife

Two immature turkey vultures, cliff swallows, 2 small sea stars.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Styrofoam, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). Pick up 5 pounds of small plastics & styrofoam, jar/can, and tooth brush.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls, Newly exposed roots/trees falling. This mile is experiencing an ever increasing landslides, (see photos), and cliff erosion. More this time than the last time I completed a report.
