Mile 147 Report
Oregon Dunes NRA, North Spit Umpqua River, Winchester Bay
April 12, 2010
Mile 147 did not have an abundance of wildlife this time compared to Fall 2009.
Report Details
Mile 147 did not have an abundance of wildlife this time compared to Fall 2009. There was more garbage then I have seen to date. Erosion looked normal. The area near the jetty was cleaner than in the past but every mile leading to the jetty was full of trash. I have a group of people that would be interested in doing a beach clean up if we could coordinate a date with the State Parks and Recreation to pick up the trash. Have contacted Trish at Parks and Recreation and she will work with me on a date.
Human Activities
Number of people: 12. Number of dogs: 2. Other Activities: In vehicles driving on beach. All vehicles were driving slowly and cautiously. One pick up was loaded with driftwood.
Concerns
Driftwood removal, Litter
Apparent violations: Not sure if it is illegal to take driftwood but a truck was loaded with wood.Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
1 sea lion. 12-20 Surf Scoters along the Jetty in the water. Cormorants. Sandpipers.7 Pelicans along the Jetty.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. Common Murr
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
None
Driftline Content
Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Shells, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. Florescent light tubes
Man-made Modifications
More driftwood from storms
Actions & Comments
We collected 6 garbage bags of trash and did not even put a dent in the garbage along the beach for mile 147. The preceeding miles were just as bad. There were 7 florescent long tube lights that we carried out with us. I called the State Parks and Recreation number to see if they would come to pick up the trash bags we left near the Jetty by the vehicle access over the sand bluff. Another black trash bag is around mile 148 (gave the GPS reading to Parks and Rec). There is also a car tire hanging from a piece of Driftwood.
