Mile 147 Report
Oregon Dunes NRA, North Spit Umpqua River, Winchester Bay
February 10, 2022
Miles 141-147 did not have any die offs or concentrations of dead marine or invertebrate animals.
Report Details
Miles 141-147 did not have any die offs or concentrations of dead marine or invertebrate animals. Pictures will show the steeper bluff formed by erosion of sand to the pathway up and over the foredune. This may fill in later on with the changing seasons. However, I have not ever seen it so steep and impossible to climb up.
Conditions
Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Foggy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 6.6 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 5. Other Activities: driving vehicles. One large class B motor home camped along the jetty.
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
A few seagulls. Windy conditions discouraged flying birds.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. 1 hawk
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
One dead washed ashore minnow
Driftline Content
Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). Most debris is buried. We dug bottles, rope and plastic bags out of the sand
New Development
Bluff development.
Natural Changes
The path normally followed up and over the foredune is now too steep to climb up due to sand being pulled away forming a steep bluff.
Actions & Comments
Not really a problem. Maybe a seasonal change but it has never been so steep to get up and over the foredune to access the area along the river.
