Mile 1 Report
Winchuck River, Crissey Airport, California border
November 26, 2020
Crissey Field Visitor Center and Winchuck River access on north side of river are both opened today.
Report Details
Crissey Field Visitor Center and Winchuck River access on north side of river are both opened today. They were both closed when I last visited in July and also within the last month or two as I observed closed gates when driving by. I did not walk on north side of river, spending time walking entire stretch of south side past Calif border to the headland below the White Rock Resort Cabins instead which I measured as a 3 mile round trip. The beach on the Oregon side of the border and south of the river is very clean with no impacts. People walking were enjoying warm sunny weather on Thanksgiving Day. Very little bird activity. Winchuck River mouth side channel on south side prevents walking from bridge to beach.
Conditions
Temperature: 57 F. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 0.9 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 21. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 21. Other Activities: Observed dirt bike tracks or else fat tire bike tracks at head of dunes and south end of beach.. One guy carried a surfboard at Winchuck River mouth but not observed in water. People count includes north of Winchuck River where I did not walk but could see from the south bank. About 10 more people and one dog were south of Calif border where I continued to walk as far as the resort cabins above the bluff.
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Very little bird activity of note: two Killdeer in the driftwood, six Bufflehead in the river, several Yellow-rumped warblers and Black phoebe at the dune/forest edge. Small gull flock observed on north side of river in rocky area.

Total dead birds: 1. One gull skeleton.
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass. Lots of large driftwood at the south side of the mouth of Winchuck River but not unusual. Beach very clean and bare all along south side of river.
New Development
None on south side of river.
Man-made Modifications
None on south side of river.
Natural Changes
Winchuck River has created a side channel on south side of the mouth since I last walked here a year ago preventing walking from the highway bridge on south side of the river to the beach.
