Mile 289 Report
Kincheloe Point, South Jetty Tillamook River
September 24, 2017
The yearly cycle of Mile 289 continues.
Report Details
The yearly cycle of Mile 289 continues. During the summer sand is deposited and dunes form. During the winter the ocean erodes the nearest of the new dunes. But over the years, the beach is getting wider, especially near the jetty. Last week we had some wild weather. There was even a waterspout off of Oceanside. There was a day of large swells. That brought the wrack line up to the newly formed summer dunes. Most of the wrack was dried out eel grass and wood. It is early in the year for this, but the ocean has since calmed down. September and early October are usually pleasant and calm.
Conditions
Temperature: 60 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 5.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 2. Walking or running: 2. The parking lot in the middle of Bayocean Spit has been more crowded throughout the summer indicating increased human usage of the spit. But mile 289 at the jetty has considerably fewer visitors due to its distance from the parking area.
Concerns
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Only some shorebirds and gulls.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 6. 4 murres, 1 cormorant, and 1 immature gull
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). The beach was very clean. The SOLV cleanup on the previous day may be part of the reason. There was some rope from crab boats. Also a log ship or log barge lost part of its load. There were 2 export logs on the beach.
Natural Changes
Summer is the season of sand deposition and dune creation. This has been the pattern for decades.

I saw so many different types of birds along the jetty, I'm no bird expert but I thought I saw pelicans, herons, cormorants, and sea gulls.
