Mile 289 Report
Kincheloe Point, South Jetty Tillamook River
December 24, 2020
There is no trace of nesting bird protection.
Report Details
There is no trace of nesting bird protection. The signage and fencing are gone. The big story on this survey is how many people are using Bayocean Spit. Yes, the weather was great after a period of rain and storms, but we have noticed that since the Covid outbreak, considerably more visitors are coming to the Oregon beaches.
Conditions
Temperature: 52 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SE. Tide Level: 2.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 11. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 11. Beautiful day on Christmas Eve brought plenty of people to the beach. We usually see very few people on Mile 289 because of the long walk. This was a record breaking amount of people sighted. The vehicle on the beach was a State Parks pickup doing a regular beach sweep. The parking area at the end of Bayocean Road in Cape Meares was over flowing and people had to park in the neighborhood.
Concerns
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
bald eagle though not at all rare now.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. cassin's auklet
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Styrofoam. The wrack was mostly woody material with the usual stuff mixed in. There was minor flooding into Tillamook Bay a few days earlier so woody debris dominates.
New Development
none
Man-made Modifications
none
Natural Changes
The storms and king tides produced no erosion. The history of this mile is sand accretion.

I saw so many different types of birds along the jetty, I'm no bird expert but I thought I saw pelicans, herons, cormorants, and sea gulls.
