Mile 270 Report
Cape Lookout south face
May 29, 2009
Beautiful sunny day!
Report Details
Beautiful sunny day! This mile of coastline has unbroken basalt cliffs with bands of rock varying dramatically, including pillow tuft. Near the end of the cape, the rock is rich in voids, each suitable one taken by birds, mostly murres. They looked fat and energetic. I saw many more guillemots than before. The kelp bed at the base of the cape has greatly expanded. I saw an otter here in the past, but not today. On my return, a whale spouted a couple of hundred yards ahead . It came up a couple more times, then disappeared in the bright, choppy conditions. They seem amazingly aware of their surroundings. The wind waves blocked getting a good view. There was a large area of fresh rock exposed that extended most of the way to the top. It may have been there last year.Overall, it looked very good.
Conditions
Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: NW.
Human Activities
unbroken vertical cliffs
Notable Wildlife
Healthy looking birds in good numbers. I saw many more guillemot than in the past fice years.
