Report Details
No slides/erosion noted. Few birds though many gulls, a few cormorants, a few western and horned grebes, surf scoters, pigeon guillemots. I saw a smattering of brown jellyfish and ochre sea stars. Lots of small mussels along the cliffs and gooseneck barnacles lining the sea cave walls.
Conditions
Temperature: 60 F. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: SE. Tide Level: 5.0 feet.
Human Activities
Kayaking: 1. A half dozen hikers spotted on the top trail.
Notable Wildlife
Two grey whales. One came over to me as I paddled against the cliff. It surfaced 20 ft. ahead of me moving directly towards me, dove under, and then resurfaced 30 ft. behind me. It then kept moving along the cliff towards the cape's tip swimming very close to the cliff. Also, I saw 6 seals, 4 sea lions one that was out of the water looking very lean perhaps too lean. Bird numbers seemed down probably due to the season. Still lots of herring gulls, a couple pigeon guillemots in winter plumage, 3 western grebes, 4 horned grebes, 8 cormorants, 8 surf scoters, no murres, no pelicans. 5 small diving birds perhaps murreletes. The bird-rich nesting sites along the southwest portion of the cape was completely deserted perhaps aided by the strong easterly winds of the last few days. I saw large brown, jellyfish every few minutes and a few ochre sea stars. There were gooseneck barnacles lining the sea cave walls and a steady wall of small mussels along the lower cliffs near the waterline.
