Mile 257 Report
Porter Point, Nestucca River
September 24, 2013
We have been walking and cleaning this stretch for several years.
Report Details
We have been walking and cleaning this stretch for several years. In recent months, we have observed many changes in beach profile with sand banks and small bays appearing and then disappearing and the sand bar allowing access to the south bank of the Nestucca River also forming and then being swept away. During the recent months, there have been almost no debris and nothing that we could discern as tsunami debris like the large sheets of open ocean Styrofoam or formed lumber such as we found last winter. Over the last month there has been dead birds (15 Murres and 2 Cormorants) and one dead sea lion. There is abundant bird life including, recently, a flock of Heermann's Gulls amidst a flock of 53 Pelicans. Eagles and Osprey often feed from the banks of the river. There are few signs of human abuse, most users clean up after themselves. There are no signs of significant erosion. The mile south of 'our' mile can be described much the same way and although used more heavily by both residents and campers, seems in good shape.
