Mile 254 Report
Kiwanda Beach, Neskowin Crest
January 29, 2023
It has been two months since my last observation and, of course, there have been many storms, a great deal of rain and high winds in that time.
Report Details
It has been two months since my last observation and, of course, there have been many storms, a great deal of rain and high winds in that time.My concern is that from the end of the rip rap and continuing for approx. 1/2 mile north, the dunes have sloughed off removing the beach grass. The height of the dunes appear to be diminished as if they have been overwashed and eroded. Because the dunes have eroded, the small bay at mid mile has become wider and deeper.
Conditions
Temperature: 41 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 1.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 14. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 13. Other Activities: 1 biker. There was evidence that a vehicle had entered the beach by The Breakers and traveled north about 2 blocks. (old tire marks in sand)
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). The beach had been scoured by the wind so there was little drift.
Natural Changes
Erosion of vegetated foredune, Evidence of wave overtopping.
Actions & Comments
From the end of the rip rap at The Sisters' house to Waltons (approx 1/2 of the mile) the dunes are sloughing off, beach grass has fallen onto the sand and the height of the dunes appear diminished.

There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.
