Mile 254 Report
Kiwanda Beach, Neskowin Crest
October 1, 2023
One cannot help but notice the 120+ large clumps on entangled kelp all along mile 254.
Report Details
One cannot help but notice the 120+ large clumps on entangled kelp all along mile 254. In the two years I have been keeping my beach diary and during the many years I have been walking this beach, I have never witnessed this phenomena.
Conditions
Temperature: 62 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 8.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 17. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 13. Sitting: 4.
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt).
Natural Changes
Newly exposed roots/trees falling, Erosion of vegetated foredune, Evidence of wave overtopping. From midway in the mile to the end of the mile there is evidence of waves overtopping the dunes with accompanying dead sea grass and shrubs. Thus the dunes are becoming lower. My concern is that the dune just north of the end of the rip rap, is disappearing and when it does, there will be danger of flooding in the village of Neskowin.

There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.

It has been two months since my last observation and, of course, there have been many storms, a great deal of rain and high winds in that time.

One dead sea lion which I understand is all too common at this time on the Oregon Coast.
