Natural Changes

Newly exposed roots/trees falling, Erosion of vegetated foredune, Visible retreat of solid bluff, Evidence of wave overtopping. I don't know why I have never thought to do this before but when I reached the end of my mile I looked south in order to determine how much beach has eroded since I was a kid - 70 years ago. Just prior to the placement of the rip rap in 1998-99, about 35 feet of property was lost to the ocean. Since then, from the point where the rip rap ends and northward, about 30-40 additional feet of beach has eroded in 23 years. As stated in my report there continues to overtopping and undercutting of dunes. In fact, where the rip rap ends, the ocean has cut a passageway that could cause flooding in the streets of Neskowin.

Mile 254

Kiwanda Beach, Neskowin Crest

There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.
