There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.

There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.

Temperature: 58 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Strong. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 2.8 feet.

Notable Wildlife
5 gulls on beach facing the strong wind
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). Many clumps of what I think are tar/oil. They may have washed up or been uncovered in the strong winds.
Natural Changes
Newly exposed roots/trees falling, Erosion of vegetated foredune, Visible retreat of solid bluff. northern 3/4 of the mile contains eroded dunes and cliffs. Beach grasses have fallen and died; bushes/small trees have fallen over cliff at north end.
Actions & Comments
It has been 5 months since my last observation and I was taken back by the amount of dune erosion which has occurred north of where the rip rap ends. The dunes have not only receded but have become smaller in height.

The north 1/2 mile of 254 was recently eroded to the point that I did not recognize it.

One cannot help but notice the 120+ large clumps on entangled kelp all along mile 254.

The north half mile of 254 (after the end of the rip rap )has experienced serious erosion.

It has been two months since my last observation and, of course, there have been many storms, a great deal of rain and high winds in that time.

One dead sea lion which I understand is all too common at this time on the Oregon Coast.
