Report Details

A pleasant day on the beach at very low tide which exposed one large tidal pool which hadn't seen before.  Besides gushing Henderson Creek, there were small "creek" outlets present.  One small concentration of velella velella.  The usual crab molts and broken shells.

Conditions

Temperature: 57 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: -1.1 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 9. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 9. Other Activities: none. 1 dune buggy - couldn't tell who it belonged to -- an authorized person or not

Concerns

Apparent violations: There was one dune buggy traveling fast near the driftline. Couldn't tell if it was a park vehicle, a business vehicle and a personal vehicle. Had never seen one before in the several years this mile was monitored...

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 5. ATVs/OHVs on beach, prohibited: 1.

Notable Wildlife

The tide was very low and gulls were at the edge of the water presumably fishing for food along with shorebirds. With the aid of the Cornell Univ Ornithology Lab bird call identification app, a possible Caspian tern was identified by its call.

Beached Birds

na

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

We had hoped to see lancet-fish but didn't. One concentration of velella velella.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Wood pieces. There are always areas of logs, wood pieces. This time there had been an effort to remove them from the driftline and to stack them vertically on top of dunes. This was near Southshore village. Wonder if this was an attempt to slow the sand erosion caused by constant hitting by the logs? (note: CoastWatch program coordinator will check on this)

New Development

A new building is occurring in Soutshore residential development at the southern end of that area.

Man-made Modifications

New riprap or shoreline protection structures. See previous section about the handling of driftline logs, etc.

Natural Changes

Looked about the same. The erosion occurs in the lower half of the mile, south of Henderson Creek. Because the tide was much lower than we usually see, a big area about 100' long and 20' wide was exposed as a large tidal pool. Another smaller area of rocks were further up talong the driftline.
