Mile 152 Report
Oregon Dunes NRA, north of Threemile Creek
September 20, 2008
A beautiful day, no wind, clear and warm.
Report Details
A beautiful day, no wind, clear and warm. Four of us, including webmaster Lloyd Maxfield, did the SOLV clean-up on this mile as well as the area near the stream outlet. We collected almost 8 bags of trash, including rope, plastic, styrofoam, beer cans, and glass. One bonfire site near the stream was a mess - broken beer bottles, diapers, etc. There was a brush fire two weeks ago, according to the ranger, and much of the driftwood in the stream was charred. There was a group campsite of about 5-6 tents in the sand near the parking lot. I think a porta-potty should be provided in the parking lot since the beach and forest seem to be popular camping spots.
Conditions
Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: 4.5 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 25. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 4. Other Activities: ATVing, driving. The heaviest usage we've seen. A group of about 6 tents in the sand near parking lot. One man said there was lots of litter at camping sites in the forest off the parking lot and there were about 30 people there the previous weekend. There is no porta-potty. With such heavy usage, there should be a toilet. Otherwise, they're going in the woods and dunes.
Concerns

Notable Wildlife
A group of sanderlings; one duck
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 3. Probably common murres - very decomposed

Very high tide and wave action and not much beach, so we were a bit uneasy, looking at the bluffs in case we needed to scamper up them.
