Report Details
I decided to do my quarterly walk a little early as it was a very pleasant day and low tide. Sky was partly cloudy, air and ocean quite calm. It was a good decision, because it seems as though the weather has been stormy ever since. The few people on the two beaches (Battle Rock and the Dock Beach) were quietly walking, one couple with their dog. The people on the dock were working on boats or standing in groups and talking. There is always tension until the crab season gets going. This year, so far, is not good for our local fishers who usually make most of their money during December and into the next year with the crab harvest.
Conditions
Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: -1.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 30. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 6. Other Activities: 2 in pickup, leaving beach. Most people -- 20+ -- on dock. *Most of the people and vehicles I saw were on the dock. This was two days after crab season was to have started. Hundreds, probably thousands of crab pots were stacked on the docks. The fishers had their price and the weather that day was calm. But the most recent checking for meat content registered too low for crabs to be taken in the bay at Port Orford.
Vehicles
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 3. All were a combination of black and white. One might have been a common murre.
Driftline Content
Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces.
