Report Details

The beach looked good today. Not much litter or storm debris. The previous high tide packed down the sand all the way to the boulders so it was easy walking. A few unique objects: an office chair at the foot of the dunes, a stuffed animal on a rock, and a wood pallet in Hubbard creek

Conditions

Temperature: 42 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NE. Tide Level: 4.5 feet.

Total dead birds: 1.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Styrofoam, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). There were more oyster shells than I've noticed here before. Fewer dead birds, and less litter. The tide was very high 9.6 that morning. It seemed to have cleaned things out rather than depositing them.

Natural Changes

I don't think there were any new fallen trees, but several have been undercut and fallen to the beach over the last year and are still there. Last winter's landslide is still moving, judging by how little vegetation has grown over the soil.

Near Battle Rock is the only area of the beach that I was a lot of small plastic pieces today
My friends with dogs say some bags are biodegradable. Do folks think they will disappear if they throw it into the surf?
I don't think this came in on the tide... A dune sled?
9.6' tide this morning brought the wrack line right up to the boulder line
Down tree that fell last summer or fall
Still no vegetation growing on last winter's landslide. Doesn't that rock in the middle look like a cat woman's face?
Some little kid must be sad to lose this guy. From the look and smell of him, I think he did spend some time in the ocean, though I found him sitting on this rock. I did not have a trash bag so I left it there.

Beautiful day! Sunny blue skies, calm winds and warm (Tee Shirt weather) People and dogs enjoying the day with the weather about as good as it gets here. Beaches looked clean and in good shape. It doesn't get much better than this.

Odd large pieces of trash near Battle Rock. Lots of bottle caps in wrack line. Many small pieces of plastic in the wrack line near Hubbard Creek. I remember my mom showing me an aluminum railing from a shipwreck sticking out of the rocks on this beach years ago when the sand was low.

I was astounded by the mass of humans on the beach, so I thought I'd report it. Port Orford made plans for beach cleanups of both the dock beach and the Battle Rock beach for July 5th.

Seems like cheating to call this a winter report, with the weather conditions being so lovely.
