Dead Gumboots were interesting, why so many?
Report Details
Dead Gumboots were interesting, why so many? The specimen of squid we found was really interesting too! Not sure why the person clamming was so dodgy, but at least they got dinner for the night! Great day on Mile 46!
Conditions
Temperature: 59 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: -0.5 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 6. Walking or running: 2. Tidepooling: 3. One person was clamming. They were very brief on conversation when approched and left immediately after being contacted. Concerning behavior . Seem to have a lot of clams in his bucket (was unable to count an amount). Cannot confirm if person was in violation of any regulations. A great day for tide pooling and a family seemed to be having a great time down on the beach!

Beached Birds
None!
Stranded Marine Mammals
None, Yay.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Unusual concentration. We found 8 dead Gumboot Chitons! Much more than normal. Also, one dead Octopus. It was about 1 1/2 inches from head to tentacle tip and perfectly clear! To bad my camera wasn't working. The clear body allowed you to see its "head/brain" like structure on the inside. Super Neat!
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Styrofoam, Wood pieces.
Actions & Comments
No major problems to address. Just observations..... A great day to be down on Mile 46!

It is AMAZING the amount of sand that has been removed (naturally) by scouring.
