This was my first visit to mile 288 after adopting the mile early in 1995.

This was my first visit to mile 288 after adopting the mile early in 1995. Some of the dynamics of the mile are 100% sandy beach in the intertidal zone, approximately a 300 foot wide intertidal zone, a 100% sandy high tide zone, and 100% of the beach is flat or only has a slight rise.None of the mile has any man-made structures. The upland adjacent to the shore is 100% vegetated dunes backed in part by bluffs that rise 20-50 feet above the high tide line. All the bluffs are of slight to moderate slope.There are no offshore rock outcroppings or islands or kelp beds visible during low tides.This was the first of many, many future visits to mile 288 on Bayocean Spit.

Number of people: 15. Number of dogs: 3. Walking or running: 9. Other Activities: 6 different people on horseback.
Notable Wildlife
Saw a flock of 15-20 whimbrel, several Western gulls, American crows, and scoters.
Stranded Marine Mammals
Total stranded mammals: 1. Noted 1 dead sea lion just south of the south end of mile 288.

It was an incredibly busy day for Mile 288 the day before the snowy plover nesting season began! I was glad to see DOGAMI and OPRD on-site, and appreciated OPRD's willingness to haul the debris I collected back to their dumpsters. It was also exciting to see so many plovers in the wet sand.

It was a beautifully calm, warm, sunny day along mile 288.

There were 6 or more plovers and large accumulations of driftwood (both along the base and on top of the foredune cutbank).

It was a beautiful, warm, sunny Saturday with a moderate north wind.

It was great to see two separate families picking up beach trash/debris in the driftline from the most recent storms including in Mile 288!

There was clear indications of active foredune erosion with visible cutbanks (see photo) and significant debris.
