Mile 288 - Bayocean Peninsula, Kincheloe Point - September 10, 2023

Report Details

It was a beautifully calm, warm, sunny day along mile 288. There was no signs of recent visitors. I avoided the snowy plover nesting areas by staying on the wet sand where I observed multiple flocks of plovers flying low over the tideline! Many of the snowy plover nest notification posts (pressure treated) had been inundated by high tides. I'm concerned about the use of pressure treated wood in locations where leaching may occur at high tides.

Temperature: 70 F. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 5.0 feet.

Human Activities

I didn't see any people in mile 288.

Cars/trucks parking: 15.

Notable Wildlife

I saw multiple flocks of plovers flying low along the tideline.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.).

Man-made Modifications

Most of the pressure treated posts with signs (installed to provide a buffer for snowy plover nests) are still in place although the high tides have disturbed many of them. One of the posts was used alongside the south jetty to build a driftwood structure.

It was an incredibly busy day for Mile 288 the day before the snowy plover nesting season began! I was glad to see DOGAMI and OPRD on-site, and appreciated OPRD's willingness to haul the debris I collected back to their dumpsters. It was also exciting to see so many plovers in the wet sand.
