A beautiful day on Mile 235. Sunny, warm, very light to no wind on the beach. Lots of people out walking, running and enjoying the day. The beach was very clean with only a few individual pieces of driftwood here and there, no rocks or shells, no animal casings, and only two pieces of debris that I came upon, etc. The most plentiful objects on the beach this day were footprints.

Conditions

Temperature: 49 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: E. Tide Level: 2.3 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 16. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 12. Playing in sand: 4.

Concerns

Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 7.

Notable Wildlife

17 seagulls were on the beach until dogs approached and then they took flight.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Styrofoam. The beach was very clean. Very little driftwood. One big kelp mass and some individual strands that were older. No rocks or shells. No animal casings. One small piece of styrofoam about the size of a coaster and a Bic lighter.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls. Very small slide piles at the foot of the bank in several places.

Throughout mile 235 and into 234, there were 13 dead Cassin's Auklets washed up on the beach, many just at tide line, 1 dead seabird, (long neck and white belly - see photo), and one dead sea lion. Much foam and bull kelp on shore.

Small fireworks debris along the entire route but one large cache of debris from fireworks on the Coronado Shores beach weighed approx 40 pounds.

New Years Day was beautiful, the beach was clean for the most part because waves have been reaching man-made riprap walls installed at the base of the cliffs from Gleneden Beach State Park south to just south of Sea and Sand RV Park.
