Mile 217 Report
Newport, Nye Beach north, Agate Beach south
October 18, 2008
There were people at and near Agate Beach Wayside and people at or near Nye Beach Turnaround, but the center part of my mile was empty of people.
Report Details
There were people at and near Agate Beach Wayside and people at or near Nye Beach Turnaround, but the center part of my mile was empty of people. The water was fairly low, but there was evidence that it had been quite high on the beach; in some places, it was wet up to the bluffs. I saw children playing in the fresh water at Nye Beach, which always concerns me. There was little wildlife. It was overcast and cool, but it was beautiful, with only light wind. There was mostly organic material in the wrack line--animal casings, seaweed, wood, shell fragments. The small dunes at the Agate Beach Wayside end are still present. Note: This report covers a little more than a mile: it runs from Agate Beach Wayside to Nye Beach Turnaround.
Human Activities
Number of people: 40. Number of dogs: 7. Walking or running: 17. Playing in surf: 4. Photography: 1. Other Activities: kite 1, volleyball 11, football 2. I saw 4 people who appeared to be hunting for rocks in the bluffs. There were many footprints on sandy bluffs.
Concerns
Climbing bluffs/seastacks, Litter
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
There were a few gulls, maybe 8 or 9, but no other birds. There was seaweed in the wrack line, as you might expect at this time of year.
Beached Birds
I saw no birds but many feathers.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces. I always see small pieces of plastic, not pellets, but broken pieces, and they are often prominent. Today there were a few.
Actions & Comments
I did not see evidence this time of new erosion. I did see evidence of activities likely to contribute to erosion, like climbing on sandy bluffs. There are still small dunes on the beach at the Agate Beach Wayside end.
