Report Details
Tentative ID of a pacific ray on the beach lying in run off stream that, according to linked Google map segment, that is located a little north of NW 20th in Newport, OR. I've walked on beaches often for many years in on this part of the coast, not seen one washed up on the beaches before, thought its presence worth noting. Measured approximately 45" at widest point, unable to measure length. ID'd by viewing online photos & descriptions for skates & rays found in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. If I can get there tomorrow, will count the teeth & take a few photos.
Conditions
Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Tide Level: 4.0 feet.
Actions & Comments
I have no violation to report, but an observation. This afternoon I saw what I believe may be/have been a Pacific Ray in the runoff stream (unlabeled/unnamed on the google map link that the Coast watch site provides for this mile) with its channel down to the beach shown as a little north of NW 20th. It was lying belly up and measured approximately 45" at its widest. I was unable to measure its length. No way of taking a photo, unable to record number of teeth. Tentative ID as a ray is based on descriptions I found online after I left the beach.I have walked beaches from Otter Rock to South Beach state park almost daily for 15 years or so, I have not seen a ray washed up on the beach before. The ray was below the higher drift lines so, depending on how high the high tide is or how many beach visitors decide it might be fun to deface/destroy it, it may be or may not be there tomorrow. Since I've not seen one before on the beach, I thought it was worth noting its presence. I saw no mention of it in any recent coastwatch report for this mile.
