Mile 217 - Newport, Nye Beach north, Agate Beach south - November 2, 2009

Report Details

The beach is seldom nicer than it was today. It was not windy, and it seemed warmer than it probably was. There were very few people, and they tended to be at the ends of my walk. A dog galloped by, pacing his owner who was running the beach. The sand had been moistened, in some places by rain and in some places by the high tides. The beach was flatter than it sometimes is. The construction continues next to the Viking Motel, and sandy bluffs are losing sand at a higher rate than usual in this season.

Temperature: 46 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NE. Tide Level: 6.6 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 11. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 11. The beach was nearly deserted. I could see from the sand how people had been enjoying the beach earlier, with horseshoe and bicycle tracks; and of course, people and dogs had been there, too. There was one odd set of tracks: two parallel tracks, like bicycle tracks, but maintaining an even distance of about six inches apart.

Notable Wildlife

There were a few gulls.

Beached Birds

I saw a great number of feathers in one spot, as if there had been a dead bird, but no sign of anything but feathers.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Unusual concentration. There were about 40 good-sized moon jellies scattered along the full length of my mile.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. As usual, there were small pieces of plastic, not pellets, but broken pieces

Natural Changes

All the sandy bluffs are showing erosion.
