Mile 217 Report
Newport, Nye Beach north, Agate Beach south
May 30, 2009
I noticed that the sand had blown against the bluffs in several spots.
Report Details
I noticed that the sand had blown against the bluffs in several spots. There was some evidence that sand and rocks had fallen down the bluffs onto the sand in a couple of places. The wind was brisk, and most of the people on the beach were walking. They were heavily concentrated at the Nye Beach end. There were bicycle tracks along the beach (visible at both ends of Mile 217), and in one spot on the Agate Beach end there were tracks from a vehicle. The tires had heavy tread.Note: This report encompasses a little more than a mile; it runs from Agate Beach Wayside to Nye Beach Turnaround.
Human Activities
Number of people: 47. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 40. Playing in sand: 7. The paper form allows me to say there were 3 cars at Agate Beach and maybe 12 at Nye Beach (it's hard to tell which cars are parked there for the beach and which for the commercial center), but here they are lumped together.
Concerns
Fire, Litter
Apparent violations: fire very close to bluffs; not picking up after dogs.Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Gulls, crows, and two smaller birds, probably swallows, but I didn't see them well enough to identify them.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces. Feathers, remains of fires, including one with scores of large rusting nails

A large swath of the bluff is well vegetated with shore pines, willow and native shrubs like silverweed, and black twinberry.
