Mile 217 Report
Newport, Nye Beach north, Agate Beach south
June 18, 2013
A beautiful evening with a lot of people out enjoying the beach.
Report Details
A beautiful evening with a lot of people out enjoying the beach. People were enjoying a variety of activities including walking dogs, throwing a ball, flying kites, playing in the waves, and playing in the sand. The dunes are very built up now, especially on the north end of the mile. There is more marine debris (pieces of plastic, ropes, packing bands) on the northern part of the mile than on the southern. I found an intact plastic packing band on the beach that had not been cut. These bands entangle marine mammals and slowly strangle them, so if you find one, please pick it up, cut it, and discard in the trash - Remember to "Lose the Loop!". Thanks.

A large swath of the bluff is well vegetated with shore pines, willow and native shrubs like silverweed, and black twinberry.
