Mile 217 Report
Newport, Nye Beach north, Agate Beach south
July 3, 2009
I am glad I went to the beach today, because I have never seen the beach on a holiday weekend, and it was very crowded and busy at both ends of the mile (Agate Beach and Nye Beach access points), although as usual, there were few in the middle.
Report Details
I am glad I went to the beach today, because I have never seen the beach on a holiday weekend, and it was very crowded and busy at both ends of the mile (Agate Beach and Nye Beach access points), although as usual, there were few in the middle. People were enjoying the beach in many ways. I was concerned, as always, about the children playing in fresh water running across the beach; I'm never sure that the fresh water quality is as good as the marine water. There were three long pieces of some cloth or plastic in the sand near the Nye Beach end; these were supported by stakes at intervals. I wasn't sure what those were for or who had placed them there. Note: This report includes a little more than a mile: it runs from Agate Beach Wayside all the way to Nye Beach Turnaround.
Human Activities
Number of people: 134. Number of dogs: 13. Walking or running: 43. Playing in surf: 13. Playing in sand: 15. Sitting: 30. Other Activities: 33. It's Independence Day weekend, and I've never seen so many people on the beach. There were 4 people climbing, 15 playing in water, 11 flying kites, 3 playing with soccer ball
Concerns
Climbing bluffs/seastacks
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
There were a few gulls and crows; no other wildlife was present.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 3. There was part of a gull wing, and there were two partial skeletal remains of birds that were probably murres; there were feathers with each of these. They were far apart on the beach, which is why I counted them as two.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
There were some jellyfish, or pieces of jellyfish. I could not identify them.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces. Debris included part of a bathing suit, remains of fireworks (ahead of the 4th), cigarette butts and plastic bags, milk jug
Natural Changes
Sandy bluffs were looking very eroded near Jumpoff Joe.
