Mile 217 Report
Newport, Nye Beach north, Agate Beach south
July 14, 2010
The summer beach is wide at low tide.
Report Details
The summer beach is wide at low tide. Low dunes have formed above the high water line. A bank of fog stood just off the beach. I was pleased to see people all along the mile; this is the first time since last summer I have seen them there. They had been almost entirely concentrated at the access points. I was disappointed by the fireworks debris; there was quite a bit of that. I have seen bicycle tracks before, but this is the first time I've seen people riding bikes on the beach.
Human Activities
Number of people: 29. Number of dogs: 7. Walking or running: 18. Playing in surf: 3. Playing in sand: 2. Sitting: 4. Other Activities: riding bikes 2. People were not cleaning up after their dogs.

Notable Wildlife
I saw only gulls and crows, but I was pleased to see them distributed along my mile; for some months now I have seen few of them in my mile.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
I saw one good-sized moon jelly.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Wood pieces. There are many small plastic fragments (not pellets). There were remains of fireworks all along the mile.
