Report Details

There were very few rocks in the wrack line. I saw mostly organic material including seaweed, shell fragments, individual feathers, and bits of wood. A surprisingly large percentage, however, was small bits of plastic and styrofoam. The wind was calm, and there were a lot of people on the beach, especially near the access points on each end. I counted cars and people at both waysides and along the beach between. There was a crane working close to the bluff. I visited the site after walking the beach to determine what the equipment was being used for, and they said they were putting down supports for a house. Note: This report covers a little more than the assigned mile. It runs from Agate Beach Wayside to Nye Beach Turnaround.

Human Activities

Number of people: 58. Number of dogs: 4. Walking or running: 46. Playing in sand: 11. Five of the cars were at Agate Beach, 5 at Nye Beach Turnaround. There was a party of 23 including many children and some adults at Agate Beach.

Concerns

Apparent violations: not cleaning up after dogs.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 10.

Notable Wildlife

There were many gulls and two crows. I saw no other birds. There was some seaweed in the wrack line.

Beached Birds

I saw no dead birds. There were many individual feathers on the beach.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. feathers, shell fragments, fishing line tangles, litter

Actions & Comments

I noticed that the house that was being built was being put close to the edge of the bluff where there had previously been some erosion. I'm not sure whether this is new information; it has been a while since I walked this beach. They were putting down supports and had a crane and other equipment working.
