Mile 169 Report
North end Siuslaw South Jetty Road
March 21, 2008
Areas of sand erosion from winter storms have softened somewhat.
Report Details
Areas of sand erosion from winter storms have softened somewhat. Still lots of driftwood of all sizes, some large tree stumps with fantastic root structures. Most notable finding was a dead, well-decomposed deer, identified by its hooves and a small amount of remaining deer-colored hair.
Conditions
Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light.
Human Activities
Did not access this mile from its closest parking area so can't report on vehicle numbers but expect there to be none since my dog and I were the only ones on the beach.
Notable Wildlife
Dead, well-decomposed deer. No head/skull present but had deer-sized hooves and small amount of deer-colored hair so am basing my identification on that.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 3. 3 northern fulmars, 2 are dark morphs, 1 light morph.
Driftline Content
Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces.
Actions & Comments
Harshness of winter storm sand removal is less pronounced. Sand erosion areas have softened and are more rounded now. Very few birds on the beach today, only an occasional gull, no shorebirds foraging.
